Description

If you’re considering a classic car that you can easily drive daily even today, then the “Pagoda” Mercedes-Benz SL should be near the top of your list – it boasts impressive build quality, a smooth and potent 6-cylinder engine, and handsome styling that has aged well. This particular 280SL is finished in a gorgeous Horizon Blue over blue color combination, and it comes with a body-colored factory hardtop. It also benefits from a recent transmission rebuild, which should provide some peace of mind for the next owner.

1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL, finished in Horizon Blue with a body-colored hardtop, a dark blue soft top, and a blue interior.

  • A partial list of notable currently installed equipment reported by the selling dealer includes wood interior trim, air conditioning, and a Becker Europa radio.
  • This SL’s transmission was rebuilt in September 2025, according to an invoice shown in the gallery.
  • Called W113 internally, the second-generation SL made its debut at the 1963 Geneva auto show. It was related to the W111 sedan under the sheet metal, and it stood out with elegant styling that later earned it the “Pagoda” nickname. Every W113 came standard with a fuel-injected straight-6, and Mercedes-Benz relied on aluminum to reduce weight, so the W113 delivered excellent performance without sacrificing comfort and luxury. Production ended in 1971, and the W113 passed the torch to the R107.
  • Power comes from a 2.8-liter straight-6, rated at about 180 horsepower and 193 lb-ft of torque. Output is sent to the rear wheels via a 4-speed automatic transmission.
